Grade 12 - Academic Skills Programme

The pupils in this third and last year of the programme have finished the Life Skills and Personal Development Programmes and are in their final year of high school. During this year, the focus is on academics and on future studies and careers.

The basis of the programme of this final year includes the following:

  • Academic tutoring - Tutoring is done by qualified teachers. The youth also form exam study groups and work through study guides. Individual sessions are held during the year to discuss issues such as motivation, concepts of success and failure, role models, goal setting and planning. The progress of the pupil is measured on an ongoing basis.
  • Academic institution and bursary sources profiling - The youth is encouraged to gain information on different institutions and bursary sources and assistance is also given to the youth with applications to tertiary institutions. The time that the youth spent participating in community work during their previous Grade 11 year is translated into monetary value that is to be used for the application and registration fees at tertiary institutions. Dependency issues are curbed by this practice as it creates a sense of self-achievement amongst the youth in the programme.
  • Job preparation - The youth is tutored with regard to interviewing skills, CV writing and office administration skills (MS Office, work habits, communication and telephone skills).
  • Cultural appreciation trip - A day trip is taken to a South African Heritage Site.
