Grade 10 - Life Skills Programme

Facilitation in the Life Skills Programme is conducted for 3 hours during a weekly meeting with the main group, splitting up into smaller groups where necessary in order to facilitate more initimate discussion. Depending on the subject matter boys and girls are at times separated for specific gender needs. The meetings begin with the learners and group leaders sharing a meal together and then the following subject matters are covered:

Intra- and interpersonal skills (self esteem, self image, communication, problem solving and team work).
Relevant themes (peer pressure, drugs & alcohol, sex & relationships and HIV/AIDS).
Basic skills training (computer literacy, use of library resources, CV writing, English proficiency and public speaking).
Career guidance.
Study methods and relevance of learning.
Balanced lifestyle and sport participation.
Value systems (ethics, morality and spirituality).

Personal insights gained during the Grade 9 programme on applicable skills needed, will become the motivational factor in the subsequent Grade 10 Life Skills Programme.

In addition to the weekly group meetings, two camps are held during the year. There are a variety of social outings as well that in the past have included hiking Table Mountain, an outing to a local restaurant, and visits to cultural/historical places like Robben Island, the Ice Rink, the Planetarium, and the Aquarium. These outings serve a twofold purpose of a fun exposure experience while also serving thematic metaphors of self-learning. Climbing Table Mountain, for instance, becomes a symbol of the effort needed to overcome a seemingly impossible obstacle.
